Fraps is proprietary and commercial software, but it is free to use for frame rate display and benchmarking, and free to use with limitations for video capture (30 second time limit, watermark) and screen capture (BMP format only). Because of the way it captures the screen contents, Fraps needs to run with administrative privileges.

The frametimes benchmark feature (logging of individual frame render times) gained attention in 2013 on computer review sites in debate about micro stuttering in games.
On Windows Vista and Windows 7, the desktop can be captured if Windows Aero is enabled. Windows 8 game capture works, but not desktop capture as of version 3.5.99.
Fraps records video at high resolution if the computer is sufficiently powerful. The maximum supported resolution is currently 7680×4800.
Fraps uses a proprietary codec. Therefore, playing Fraps video output requires Fraps or ffdshow to be installed. Compression is relatively low and the resulting file sizes are relatively large: A two-minutes-long screencast of a full HD screen (1920×1080) may take up 3.95 GiB on disk. There is an option to encode the RGB value of every pixel, but the default is to use a YUV scheme for better compression. The color space used is Rec. 709, full range.

With this application, your video recordings are saved as .avi files. You can open these files with most video editing programs and compress them to any file type you wish. Fraps has the option to split your videos into 4GB chunks. This used to be a default setting, but has been removed so you can record as much as you like. However, splitting the video has several benefits, among them redundancy and convenience. If your game crashes while you're recording, you could lose the entire video because it hasn't been saved. But if you split every 4 gigabytes, then each piece is saved while you record. Additionally, smaller videos are often easier to edit than one large file.
Fraps utilizes a loop buffer tool that allows you to record your gameplay retroactively. As you play a game and the action gets intense, you may forget to hit the record hotkey. With the loop buffer, you can hit the record button as soon as you remember and the recording will include everything in the buffer you set, starting, for example, two minutes earlier than when you hit the record hotkey.
Help & Support7.5/10

The support documentation for Fraps is not very extensive. This doesn't pose much of a problem since this game capture software is rather simple to use, and the information that's readily available will answer most users' questions. Unfortunately, there isn't any built-in help in the application. The help button takes you to the Fraps website, where you will find a FAQs section regarding the application's various functions.
The Fraps website has a Contact Us page where you can send the development team a ticket with inquiries or requests for help. The speed of their response is admirable, often replying on the same day the ticket was submitted. The support representatives are friendly and very helpful.
Another disappointment is there is no official user forum. Fortunately, there are fan-made forums that can help you learn more about Fraps' advanced abilities and its limitations. An official forum would greatly bolster the community and help users better understand the application.
Fraps Summary9/10

Fraps may look like simple, bare-bones video game capture software, but the tools Fraps gives you are powerful. We would like to see better support options, especially since video game recording is a complex process and there are a lot of things that can go wrong. However, this game recording software has a simple user interface and most of the functionality we look for in the best game recording software. Fraps was designed to run concurrently with games and record gameplay footage at the highest possible quality. The application's dedication to that task has earned it a top spot in the game capture community and in our lineup.
